While Intel’s mainstream Core processors do not have as much raw processing power as their competition, they do have an edge when it comes to working with certain video codecs in supported applications: Quick Sync. In the case of DaVinci Resolve, this provides hardware acceleration for working with H.265 based footage which other video cards cannot currently provide. However, most "system requirements" lists tend to cover only the very basics of what hardware is needed to run the software, not what hardware will actually give the best performance. The processor (or CPU) is one of the most important pieces of a post-production. While GPU acceleration is gaining traction, right now your choice of CPU is usually going to make a much larger impact on overall system performance. However, the way that After Effects Premier Pro or Davinci uses the CPU means that it is difficult to be sure of how a given processor will perform just from looking at clock speed and core count - which is exactly why we perform testing on a wide range of hardware.

H.264 / HEVC Workstation

For workflows using H.264 and H.265 codecs, this system with an Intel 13th Gen processor and NVIDIA video card is a terrific choice. By utilizing up to two video cards, this system is able to power through renders many times faster than a standard workstation. OctaneRender and Redshift is able to utilize multiple video cards to decrease render times, but not everyone needs or has the budget for the absolute fastest rendering machine with three or four GPUs. As an alternative, this tower workstation is able to fit one or two full-sized video cards (depending on the model) while taking up a little less space and costing a lot less money than a quad GPU tower. Like most software developers, Autodesk maintains a list of system requirements for various versions of AutoCAD that can be used to help ensure the hardware in your system will work with AutoCAD. However, most "pc requirements" lists tend to cover the required hardware, not what hardware would actually give the best performance. When it comes to CPUs there are two main specifications that define the capability of a CPU:&nbsp; The frequency directly affects how many operations a single CPU core can complete in a second (how fast it is).&nbsp; The number of cores is how many physical cores there are within a CPU (how many operations it can run simultaneously).&nbsp; Whether a higher frequency or higher core count is faster depends on how well a program is designed to take advantage of multiple CPU cores. In the case of AutoCAD, the majority of the software is only single threaded so it is only able to utilize a single core of the CPU. For this reason, our general recommendation when choosing a processor is to get the highest frequency. For current generation CPUs, that is Intel's Core i9 12900K or i7 12700K, both of which offer high clock speeds alongside a good number of cores (for multitasking, etc).

While most CAD/CAM tasks do not need a CPU with a high number of cores, if your work includes lots of simulations or rendering within Inventor you can see an increase in performance by using a CPU with more physical cores.
